Dealing with neighbors in an apartment
Posted by admin on February 23rd, 2009 filed in GeneralUnfortunately living in an apartment means living in close quarters with neighbors. Neighbor situations can be great or they can be a huge nuisance, depending on each situation. The best thing to do is be ready to make compromises and stop arguments before they lead to bigger issues.
The walls are often thin.
At some point, you are going to hear your neighbors – music, TVs or other activities. This can be very stressful, especially if you are used to living in a quiet environment on your own. The senior citizen living below me in my old Fargo apartment had his TV blasting from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. because he was hard of hearing. It pretty much caused me to move out because I could not handle the stress anymore. It’s especially stressful if your neighbors are loud when you are trying to sleep, for example if you work different shifts.
If you are courteous to your neighbors, they are more likely to be courteous to you. Don’t have your TV or music too loud and remember if you are talking loudly, they can probably hear you. Just be respectful. If you are going to throw a party with loud guests and loud music, you might want to check with your neighbors first and get their OK with it. After all, they are going to have to deal with the noise.
If you work during the night or evening and sleep during a different schedule than your neighbors, try wearing earplugs while you sleep. They work great if you wear them correctly. Running a fan or something else to create white noise to cover up other background noise also works well.
