Categorizing Your Home

Recently I wrote about the importance of categorizing the objects in your home. I wanted to explore this idea today in a little more depth.

Everything in your house or apartment has a proper place. Unfortunately most items don’t come with directions on where that proper place is. Some objects are obvious. Heavy cleansers probably need to go under the kitchen sink. Perishable foods need to go in the refrigerator or freezer.

But for many objects in our possession, the place for that object is up to you to decide. This can be overwhelming for many people. It requires a certain creativity that you may not feel that you possess. Categorizing is that essential step that makes the actual placement of all objects easier.

The first thing that you have to do is clear out a large space, either in your house or out in your yard. If you’re expecting good weather, go ahead and do it outside. But you’ll need a couple of large tarps to place down on the grass.

Gather up all of your loose objects in your house and take them to this big space and place them into a large pile. Then, one by one, start going through this pile and place everything into categories. Then you will want to put everything away, either in baskets, bins, or drawers, based on their category. Everything has to have a place. Nothing can be left out unless it’s something decorative.

Categorizing your stuff is an essential step to improving the quality of your home. With everything placed in its’ new location, you’ll find that you have a surprising amount of counter space to do activities. You’ll have more room for decorations. And when you move or relocate, you’ll find packing to be a breeze. Half the job will be done for you already.
